Ancient House Clopton
Bed and Breakfast
A
heavily beamed Grade II listed house, dating from the early 17th
century with 18th century additions, the Ancient House combines
the charm of the past with all the comforts of today. Among the
interesting period features are numerous small mullioned windows.
The house is set well back from the road in an attractive garden,
screened and sheltered by mature trees. Apart from the crowing
of a local cockerel and the dawn chirping from birds' nests in
the spring, sleep should be undisturbed!
For
those with an interest in the history of old houses, the Ancient
House was originally three cottages which were converted into one
house in the early 1960s. Census returns for 1841 and 1851 reveal
that the occupants at that time were wheelwrights and blacksmiths.
Other records show that from 1847 to 1866 a wheelwright by the name
of George Dowsing, who lived here with his wife Charlotte and daughter
Rosetta, was also the Parish Constable. A hundred years later in
the early 1960s a Miss Dowsing – presumably one of George's
descendants – at the great age of over 90 was living here
and drawing her water from a well. She is remembered by some of
the older residents of Clopton.
With
only one bedroom in the house used for bed and breakfast visitors
means a couple not looking for the company of other guests and preferring
to be on their own might find this to their liking.
